AFCON fever hits the Gambia

AFCON fever hits the Gambia

The Gambia booked their first ever ticket to the African cup of nations after beating Angola at the Bakau independent stadium.

The Scorpions needed a 62nd minute strike from Assan Ceesay to defeat the “Palancas Negras” and also secure their debut AFCON berth.

Gambia needed a victory provided that Gabon beat Dr Congo and that happened with the 2017 AFCON host defeating their fellow Central Africans by three goals to nothing.

The Scorpions goal scored by Assan Ceesay which was his third in the qualifiers came in the 62nd minute after a brilliant cross from Bubacarr Trawally saw Ablie Jallow’s connection being punched by the Angolan keeper and Ceesay slotting home the rebound.

Gambians were in a frenzy after the end of the game as they got on the streets to celebrate throughout the country.

Liverpool and Senegalse forward Sadio Manneh penned congratulations messages to Gambia for the historical moment.
